Wikis

A wiki is a type of Web page or site that allows users to easily create, edit, and organize web pages. Many wikis allow anyone to create and edit any page, often anonymously.  Examples of some of the world’s most popular wikis include: Wikipedia, Wikitravel and WikiHow.  At Colleges and Universities Wikis are becoming increasing popular as a tool to encourage collaborative group work.   Using a versioning capability Wikis can demontrate and illustrate the evolution of thought processes as students interact with a site and its contents. Wikis are also being used as e-portfolios, highlighting their utility as a tool for collection and reflection. They may be the easiest, most effective Web-based collaboration tool in any instructional portfolio.

The word wiki is derived from the Hawaiian word wikiwiki, which means quick, and is pronounced “wicky” or “weeky,” depending on who you ask.
