What is it?
A flip camera is a simple to use flash-memory-based video camera.

How does it work?
The camera runs on battery power. Some models have a rechargeable battery, but all will run on alkaline batteries. The camera has simple record and zoom controls. The record button also serves as the stop button. Point the camera at what you want to record and when you are done press the record button again to stop the recording. Plug the camera into your computer and, after installing the included software, you can download the video to your computer.
Things to consider
The Flip cameras do record audio, but it is of limited quality. If the audio is an important part of the recording make sure that the recording environment is relatively quiet. The cameras do not have image stabilization capabilities. Use a tripod or other device/setup to ensure that the camera is stable to avoid jerky video capture. The memory is flash based, and cannot be changed by the user. The camera is limited to the memory installed in the camera.
Uses as an Instructional Technology
These cameras can be a great tool for documenting a project or field research.
Adding a meaningful and appropriate video component to a project can add interest and facilitate more higher order thinking skills.
